You don’t have to look too hard (or travel too far) for something fun to do this Canada Day weekend!
Whether you hit a patio or the trails, your local options are plentiful. Use this list as a jumpstart but don’t stop here!
Explore History and Culture
Immerse yourself in the rich history and vibrant culture of Central York. Start with a visit to the Sharon Temple in East Gwillimbury, a historic site and architectural marvel. Built in the 19th century, visitors can explore its unique design and take in several small exhibits, including Womanhood in the 1800s. Enjoy their free Canada Day Community Celebration from 11 am – 4 pm on July 1st.
Enjoy a Little Nature
Central York is home to some beautiful parks and trails, including the Nokiidaa Trail, a 20-kilometre (km) trail that connects Aurora, Newmarket and East Gwillimbury and incorporates Newmarket’s popular Tom Taylor trail and Fairy Lake Park. There are several access points with many other local trail connections. Much of this trail is paved, smooth gravel or boardwalks making it ideal for walkers, cyclists and strollers.
There’s also Dave Kerwin Trail & Peggy’s Wood Trail, which connect for a 3.7 km route through the forest. Located on the west side of Newmarket and East Gwillimbury, this scenic trail runs between Davis Drive and Green Lane. The main trail is perfect for young families and there is a playground along the route.

Be Adventurous
For those seeking a bit of indoor adventure, Of Rock and Chalk Climbing Gym has plenty to keep climbers of all ages interested. Featuring more than 46 routes and walls from 10 to 37 feet tall, no prior experience is necessary, and there’s an orientation available to familiarize you with climbing techniques. An “auto belay” system is designed to keep you safe on the way up and down. (Heads up: they are closed Canada Day!)
Enjoy the Farmers’ Market & Main St.
Delicious fresh fruits and veg, cool goods from local artisans, great music and even better ambience… just some of what awaits you at the Newmarket Farmers’ Market which runs Saturday mornings from May through October at Riverwalk Commons.
While you’re there, don’t forget to enjoy a stroll down Main Street to enjoy the charming heritage buildings and unique shops. Just a few of our faves: Metropolis Mercantile + Café, Jack + Marion Trading Co. and Good Vibes on Main.

Take in Canada Day
In Newmarket, the Tim Hortons Canada Day Festival runs from 11 am-4 pm on Monday, July 1, 2024. Both Riverwalk Commons and Main St. will be filled with an array of family-friendly activities, including live music performances, face painting, games, busker entertainment, and more. Parking will be in short supply, so save yourself the headache and use the handy (and free!) shuttle buses. Visit newmarket.ca for more info, including details on the Evening Concert & Fireworks.
In East Gwillimbury, enjoy an evening of fun with activities, live music, and food vendors taking over Mount Albert Lions Community Centre (5057 Mount Albert Road, Mount Albert) from 6 to 10 p.m when the fireworks start.
