Reframe How You View Networking
If the thought of mingling in a room full of strangers fills you with dread, you’re not alone. But networking doesn’t have to be nerve wracking. With a few strategies, you can build a great community without breaking a sweat.
But first things, first – why network at all? In short, because it’s good for your personal and professional growth! People like doing business with those they like and trust, and expanding your professional reach can open doors to new opportunities, insights and collaborations. Building a strong network can lead to lasting relationships and support systems that enrich your career journey.
Cherry Pick Your Networking Opportunities
Who says networking has to involve a big room packed with strangers? Reframe what constitutes networking. Workshops, groups and seminars often provide a more relaxed atmosphere, making it easier to connect with others than say, at a large event. And don’t knock the power of a great coffee meeting. You absolutely can build a community one cup and person at a time!
Another option are events where networking is a component but not the sole focus. For example, at the CYC’s annual SHIFT Summit, participants can chat with other attendees during breaks as well as visit vendor booths. These types of events are a great way to ease into networking.
Finally, if you do want to dive in, consider attending one of our Chamber After Hours events. They’re fun (we promise!) and included with your CYC membership. Another option? One of the CYC’s networking groups. These smaller groups make it easy to slowly build your community over time.

Quality Over Quantity
Speaking of going slow, when networking don’t feel like you have to meet everyone in the room. Focus on making a few solid connections rather than collecting a stack of business cards.
It’s not about making a sale; it’s about building relationships and community. Look to connect with people with whom you share common interests or goals. This approach will make networking feel less like a chore and more like building a circle of friends.
When you’re nervous it’s sometimes easy to fall into the trap of talking about yourself. That’s perfectly fine (to a degree) but be sure to share the spotlight. People appreciate an active listener, so ask open-ended questions and show genuine interest in others to help conversations flow naturally.
Bring a Wing Person!
We’ve all got those colleagues and friends who love meeting new people… why not bring one along?! Those awesome extroverts can help break the ice and make it easier to meet new people. Plus, having a familiar face around can boost your confidence and make the experience more enjoyable.
Follow Up
The real magic of networking happens after the initial meeting. Send a thoughtful follow-up email or message to the people you meet. Mention something specific from your conversation to show that you were truly engaged. This simple gesture will help you be more memorable and can turn a brief encounter into a lasting professional relationship.
Whatever you do, don’t make it about making a sale! Remember, we do business with those we like and trust. This is about long-term growth, not short-term gain.
Use Social Media
While nothing beats face-to-face interactions, platforms like LinkedIn are a great way to expand your network from the comfort of home. Connect with people in your industry, join relevant groups, and participate in discussions. When you do meet people in a professional capacity, add them to LinkedIn to stay connected.
Networking doesn’t have to be a source of stress. With these strategies, you can make meaningful connections and build a strong professional network while staying true to yourself. So, go ahead, step out of your comfort zone a little, and watch your network grow!
